This project involved redesigning The Field Guide to the Birds of New Zealand by Barrie Heather and Hugh Robertson, as part of a brief focused on typography and print collateral. The outcome includes a redesigned book cover, a bookmark, and a promotional banner, brought together through a visual language inspired by New Zealand's native wildlife and the decorative traditions of the Arts and Crafts movement. The hand lettered title and illustrations were created using coloured pencils on green cardstock, to give the artwork a tactile, organic quality.
The cover artwork celebrates the kārearea, winner of Bird of the Year in 2025, alongside other native wildlife. The birds and flora within the falcon allude to what it feels like birdwatching out in the field, spotting birds among the branches and trying to identify them based on distinct features and silhouettes. The visual identity is carried across the supporting collateral, with the bookmark providing a handy reference to the key features of bird anatomy used for identification.
