The Honeywrap Design Competition is a collaboration between Honerywrap and Forest & Bird, running annually alongside the Bird of the Year campaign to help raise awareness of New Zealand native birds and their habitat. The focus of the competition is to to design a beeswax wrap pattern depicting New Zealand native birds.
My entry was selected as a runner-up to the winning design in 2023. I took inspiration from Mākara beach, one of my favourite places to visit when I'm looking to escape from the city and immerse myself in nature. Two of the birds that are most commonly seen in this area are the tōrea pango and the kāruhiruhi. These coastal birds are often overlooked, which is why I've decided to depict them in my artwork, to showcase the vast diversity and uniqueness of Aotearoa's wildlife.
