Tiny Wellington is an animated digital installation. I created it for a university brief to make a short atmospheric motion design piece. For this project, I proposed a set of three richly detailed animated scenes that celebrate and showcase what makes Wellington special: its vibrant arts scene, walkability, food, and quirky personality.
Each scene is an illustration of one of Wellington’s iconic locations: the Waterfront, Cuba Street, and the Cable Car. The environments are filled with dozens of tiny stories: people queuing up for coffee, seagulls eyeing up chips, buskers performing, cyclists, buses, and pedestrians rushing by, and Wellington’s art installations. I took this detailed and playful approach to show off Wellington’s lively atmosphere and will invite viewers to look closely and discover all of the city’s little quirks.
I created a storyboard and illustrations, and animated the characters in Adobe After Effects, taking a richly detailed and playful visual approach with a diorama-like aesthetic. The vibrant colour palette, combined with ambient sound design, sets the mood of Wellington as a creative, welcoming, and lively city. The scenes run for around thirty seconds and loop seamlessly, creating a miniature portrait of the capital.
